(Jun 10, 2009, Tainan) Chi Mei Optoelectronics (CMO) today received recognition for outstanding individual contribution and technology excellence in the 2009 Gold Panel Awards, and the 2009 Outstanding Photonics Product Award. This is the sixth year in a row since 2004 that CMO has been recognized for its technology excellence and outstanding photonics products, demonstrating the company's achievements in the continuous research and development of flat panel display technology. In the 2009 Gold Panel Awards held by the Color Imaging Industry Promotion Office (CIPO) of the Ministry of Economic Affairs’ Industrial Development Bureau (IDB), CMO’s ultra-slim 9.9mm local dimming display received the Technology Excellence Award; and Dr. Biing-Seng Wu, who was appointed CMO director in March this year, received the Outstanding Individual Contribution Award. As consumer demand for colorful visual enjoyment increases, CMO's technology team has made great progresses in LED local dimming technology, outperforming the competition to win this year's Technology Excellence Award. CMO's award-winning display is characterized by (1) ultra thinness: successfully developing the world's largest, thinnest LED local-dimming display (the 55” panel is merely 9.9mm thick, which is one-fourth the size of current local-dimming displays) using a proprietary algorithm for controlling LCD signals without affecting color details and layers, providing customers with greater product design flexibility; and (2) high efficiency: power consumption is merely 30~40% of existing LED backlighting for dark night or pure color scenes (i.e. efficiency has been enhanced more than 2.5 fold), saving power and the environment. The Outstanding Individual Contribution Award given to CMO director Dr. Biing-Seng Wu was a well-earned honor. During his tenure as TFT LCD sub-project director at the Industrial Technology Research Institute of Taiwan (ITRI) 1987-1993, he developed Taiwan's first LCD panel, paving the way for Taiwan's LCD panel industry. In 1997, Dr. Wu helped in establishing CMO, and completed the building and operation of Taiwan's first TFT LCD plant. He also successfully led CMO in bringing LCD TV to the masses, developed a channel for collaboration between the industry, universities and research institutes, and initiated the trend for vertical integration of the panel industry. His effort in managing and improving intellectual properties, and building a patent map, ensures the future development of Taiwan’s LCD industry, greatly contributing to improving the standard of technology and international standing of Taiwan's panel industry. CMO was presented the 2009 Outstanding Photonics Product Award by the Photonics Industry & Technology Development Association (PIDA) for its 57” Vivid Motion Technology TV panel. The advent of the era of digital home entertainment has put the spotlight on LCD panel motion picture quality. Way back in 2006, CMO, successfully integrated 120Hz driving technology, slashing Motion Picture Response Time(MPRT) 6.5 ms by combining scan backlight with MEMC technology. Today, CMO has made further advancement, debuting the world's first 240Hz TFTLCD panel at the end of last year. The panel was awarded this year and remains the world's largest 240Hz panel. In addition to having a frame rate that is four times that of the conventional display, by using LED scan backlight technology, CMO has also cut the MPRT to 3ms, successfully allowing LCD motion picture quality to surpass that of CRT displays. The clarity of a motion picture is virtually the same as that of static ones, making it the most competitive motion picture enhancement technology in the industry today. Starting today (Jun 10), CMO will be exhibiting all the above award-winning products and technologies at Display Taiwan 2009, held for three consecutive days at Taipei World Trade Center Exhibition Hall 1. Representatives for the awards will also be receiving their awards at the opening ceremony today. |
