Coastal Plain League alum, Greg Holland of Kansas City (photo courtesy of the Kansas City Royals), was named to the 2014 MLB American League All-Star team. The game will be televised by FOX at 7:30 p.m. ET on July 15 at the Minnesota Twins’ Hicks Field.
The North Carolina native pitched for the Edenton Steamers in the summer of 2006. He ended the season third in total saves with 11, striking out 29 batters in 33 2/3 innings, while allowing only seven earned runs on his way to a 1.87 ERA and .198 opponents batting average.
A former Western Carolina standout, Holland has had a breakout season in 2014 finishing the first half with the second most saves in the American League at 23 behind Seattle’s Fernando Rodney who has 25. He has not given hitters much of a chance either, having only blown one save and striking out 50 batters in only 32 2/3 innings for a 1.04 WHIP and 1.93 ERA.
This marks Holland’s second All-Star selection following last year’s selection as a replacement for the injured Hisashi Iwakuma. The 5-10, 220 pounder has quickly established himself as one of the premier closers in the game after being inserted into the role midway through 2012 and earning the 2012 Bruce Rice Royals Pitcher of the Year award.
