Coffey Projects reaping Rudd’s rewards
(2 April 2009) Coffey International Limited today announced that its subsidiary Coffey Projects has become one of the recipients of the recently announced ‘Building the Education Revolution’ (BER) program, part of the Rudd Government’s $42 billion Nation Building and Jobs Plan to support jobs that will stimulate local economies and invest in important infrastructure for the long term.
Coffey Projects will provide project management services for 120 schools in Western Australia and a further 10 schools throughout Queensland. The business will also provide support to 37 independent and Catholic Schools in the Australian Capital Territory which are submitting proposals for school improvements.
Coffey Projects chief executive officer Tom Tucker said he was proud that Coffey Projects’ specialist project management skills had been selected to provide a solid foundation for the nation’s economy.
“One of the prime objectives of the package is to provide economic stimulus through the rapid construction and refurbishment of school infrastructure, so we will be starting the project process urgently, including the issuance of multiple tender packages.”
Coffey Projects’ role in Western Australia encompasses project management consultancy services involving around 14 architects, with an estimated project value of circa $281 million over two years.
In Queensland, the Department of Education, Training and the Arts has emphasised that performance of the consultants is a key criteria to the success of this program as well as local industry participation. The current allocation of schools is only the tip of the iceberg with approximately 1,000 projects yet to be awarded.
Of the initial allocation, Coffey Projects will upgrade the following schools:
Townsville
- Heatley SS
- Hermit Park SS
Brisbane
- Graceville SS
- New Farm SS
- Kenmore SS
- Oxley SS
- Petrie Terrace SS
Regional schools
- Tara Shire SS
- St George SS
- Chinchilla SS
In the Australian Capital Territory, Coffey Projects will support the ACT Block Grant Authority assess proposals from the schools, particularly with respect to cost and sustainability initiatives, and monitor progress and expenditure. Project management services may also be provided at a local level to assist individual schools with delivery.
Coffey Projects, as the largest project management consultancy in Australia, is well positioned to support the Federal and State Governments in this and other programmes that they are endeavouring to fast-track.
