“The time when individuals could rely on others to overcome their problems for them is long past.  Current trends are moving away from dependency on institutions and towards more personal autonomy. Everyone needs to be able to make responsible decisions regarding their behaviour and take control of their own lives “

Dr. Theano V Kalavana, Scientific Director, Pause Button Therapy International

How wonderful and life changing it would be if a person could occasionally just pause, freeze time for a few moments and consider the consequences of the actions they were about to take. With the benefit of hindsight, how often would they have chosen to do something different?

Pause Button Therapy (PBT) has been proven to be a unique psychological technique to effect change. It is an interactive tool, which has been shown to support other therapeutic approaches including Cognitive Behaviour Therapy, Mindfulness-based interventions and NLP.

PBT is based on a simple idea, which has a broad diversity of applications. If someone knows how to use a remote control, they know how to press pause, fast-forward, rewind, and ultimately, play. This makes PBT accessible to people of all ages as a stand-alone therapy.  Initial trials demonstrated that children and young people effortlessly understood how to use PBT to change their behaviour.

PBT is pro-active and provides additional thinking time. It cleverly, yet simply, uses a distinctive strategy to make the best possible use of that time, allowing a person to consider the potential consequences of their actions and adjust their behaviour accordingly.

PBT works with the brain to bridge the gap between thoughts, intentions and actions.  It discourages immediate reaction and ‘here and now’ thinking, and encourages virtual exploration of a range of potential consequences. This takes advantage of how the brain works best to make change desirable.  PBT uses the human capacity for creating vivid, realistic internal scenarios and images, combined with a unique tactile reminder device to place control firmly with the individual.

This exciting new methodology has grown out of more than four year’s experience treating a wide range of addictive behaviours.  It is a therapy that has been successfully used to instigate behavioural change and increase the effectiveness of structured programmes, resulting in users living more successfully in the present.

“Most of the theories explaining behaviour change have failed to bridge the gap between motivation and actual change.  They describe only the process of reaching behaviour goals whereas PBT puts the theory into practice and leads to success.”  Dr. Theano V Kalavana, Scientific Director,
