Columbia defeats Lindenwood-Belleville in AMC Women's Basketball Game of the Week

COLUMBIA, Mo. – This evening the 16th ranked Columbia College women's basketball team was back in action when they took on the 24th ranked Lindenwood-Belleville (Ill.) University in the AMC Game of the Week. The Cougars defeated the Lynx by a final score of 58-47 and improved to 5-3 on the season.

The game got off to a slow start as each team was trying to settle in and get their offense rolling. The first quarter was very tight as both teams exchanged points as the quarter progressed. The Cougars trailed 12-13 after one-quarter of play. Columbia was battling as they trailed most of the second quarter until a big three from Sarah Walters was able to tie the game at 23 with four minutes to go before the break.  The Cougars used a 7-2 run to close out the first half and take the lead 30-25 heading into halftime.

The Cougars were able to carry over their momentum from the end of the first half to go on an 8-4 run to start the third quarter as they led 38-29. As the quarter progressed, the Cougars were able to keep the lead, but the Lynx were not far behind as Columbia led 47-42 heading into the final quarter of the game.

The Cougars came out playing tough defense forcing some turnovers and causing the Lynx to take some tough shots. Columbia held the Lynx scoreless for the first six minutes of the quarter. The Lynx scored their first bucket with four minutes to go in the game as the Cougars led 52-45. Lindenwood-Belleville did their best to stay in the game, but Columbia was able to outlast the Lynx with a 58-47 victory.  

The Cougars were led by Morgan Brandt who recorded 17 points and seven rebounds. In addition, Ashlee Marlatthad 10 points along with five rebounds. Columbia shot 35 percent from the field, 36 percent from three, and 70 percent from the line. They also snagged 14 steals in the contest.

Columbia is back in action on Saturday, December 2nd, when they travel to Fulton, Missouri to face William Woods University in an AMC matchup. The game is set to tip-off at 1:00 p.m.
