Coach of the Year - Chad Kish (Weyburn)

Chad is currently coaching the Gold Wings, but started coaching Initiation in 2002 and has been coaching ever since. He was the driving force in bringing Weyburn the Midget girls AA and Midget girls AAA programs and have made them both very successful. He was also instrumental in making Weyburn girls hockey the strong program it is today.

Chad is a very hands on coach with his own team, but also makes time for other teams. He's always ready to help out and regularly recruits Gold Wings to assist other teams during practices or other events, such as the Girls Intro to Hockey skates.

As this may be his last year coaching, I think it would be a great way to honor him and what he's done for Weyburn Minor Hockey, especially the girls’ program.

Volunteer of the Year (North) - Pete and Betty Hubick (Southey)

Allan ‘Pete’ Hubick is from Southey, SK, and has grown up in the community. For the local hockey community Pete is an icon, when one thinks of Pete you think of the rink and hockey. Pete continues to put in lots of volunteer hours with the rink and SHA as he has done for the past 20 plus years. Pete has been the President of both Southey Minor Hockey and Southey Rink Board. In 1995 Southey opened a new rink facility- as the old rink burned down- Pete was a key volunteer in getting the new rink planned, built and running. Prior to the new rink being opened he served on the old Rink board for 6 years.
Pete’s present volunteer position includes the rink’s Scheduler, which has been doing for numerous years and actively serving on SHA for the past 5 years.

Southey Minor Hockey proudly nominates Pete as our outstanding volunteer for our hockey community and couldn’t think of a more deserving individual of the Champion Award. In addition to his volunteer service, Pete has donated a quarter of his land to the Southey Rink to farm to help subsides the operational costs of the rink for 4 years.

Betty Hubick is from Southey, SK and has grown up in the community. Betty has served as a volunteer for our hockey community for at least 20 years. Juggling a family of two boys, both of them were heavily into hockey as well baseball and school sports, working full time as a teacher in Strasbourg, Betty had been the Secretary/Treasurer of both Southey Minor Hockey and Southey Rink Board. Betty is an outstanding volunteer and could always be found at the rink in meetings, volunteering in the booth, fundraising for the rink and most of all supporting hockey in the community of Southey. Betty has been an integral part of making sure hockey in Southey continues to thrive today.

Volunteer of the Year (South) - Leonard Gaetz (Odessa)

Leonard has coached or managed minor hockey from 1986 to 2004. In 2001, Leonard started and managed a Jr. C hockey team based out of Odessa. In the 12 years the team has played, they have won the Brewer’s Cup twice, the league and provincial title three times. Leonard has no kids involved in hockey on this team, but continues to volunteer to keep the program going.

He was on the senior hockey board from 2005 to 2008. The team took a couple of years off and then began play again in 2010 with Leonard as manager. He has no kids on this team either. Leonard has sat on the Odessa Recreation Board for approximately 28 years, 21 as president. He continues to sit on this board today. He has been taking ice bookings for the Odessa Rink for approximately 20 years and continues today. In the year 2008 a new hockey association was formed between Odessa, Vibank, Sedley and Francis called Quad Town. Leonard helped in the formation of this minor hockey association and served on its board of directors for a few years as well.

Leonard continues to volunteer year after year, never complaining. Leonard is well respected in not only Odessa, but all over this part of the province. He is dedicated and consistently puts the community ahead of himself. For his effort, I believe our community is a better place for all.
