From desktop monitors, to iPads and tablets, to dashboards in cars … as LCD screens become cheaper, digital displays are popping up everywhere. And they’re being deployed as information boards, to post signage, to broadcast educational content – all kinds of uses that fall into the ‘information push’ category.

That's the current status of a corporation's 'pixel estate': its growing collection of digital displays in all shapes, sizes and formats. Highly flexible and instantly updateable, digital displays allow a company to broadcast content via a variety of screen applications.

One common example: corporate videos can be shown continuously in lobbies and reception areas. As clients wait for a contact or meeting, they can be entertained as well as educated with a brief corporate history, case studies of major products, testimonials and success stories, and so on.

Digital glass - a dynamic medium

But what about 'info pull' and information sharing? For example, an interactive kiosk in the lobby, where guests can enter their details for future business opportunities.

Barco is actively investigating the booming digital display business to find best practices for creating content and to maximize interactive communication and collaboration. Key research questions are: how to best capture and share information? And how to tie the diverse variety of a corporation's screens together? We already have solutions that enable interactivity through, for example, smartphones.

We are also acutely aware of the dangers that abuse of these screens can pose to personal and corporate privacy. Plus, just like Muzak of a generation ago, omnipresent screens have the potential to degenerate into bland, irrelevant - even irritating - content.

Implemented correctly, digital signage is a truly dynamic medium that can be customized to help organizations communicate and convey information in their own unique style.

Our goal is to help companies use digital glass as an extension of their corporate identity and to ensure that they can reach their objectives with their ubiquitous digital screens.
