Cycling Kilimanjaro – Discover Africa’s tallest mountain by bike
Cycling Kilimanjaro is a unique experience, and one that should only be done with the assistance of professional tour guides. This beautiful area of Africa offers such contrasting landscapes and wildlife, from the dusty plains to solitary rainforests.
Lüneburg, Germany., January 26, 2012 - (PressReleasePoint) - Cycling Kilimanjaro may not be the most conventional method of exploring this breathtaking area of Africa, but it certainly is one of the most fascinating. This 180 mile bike trail leads around Africa’s tallest mountain and highest volcano, taking in solitary rainforests, fertile fields of crop and wild, dry acacia rich savannah. This region is of course home to the Maasai – an ethnic group of semi-nomadic people famous for their distinctive customs and dress. Part of this adventure also includes a walking safari in the accompaniment of a Maasai guide, with the chance of witnessing local wildlife such as lions, zebra and elephants in their natural habitat.
There are of course many opportunities along the way to sit back and take in the sights, smells and sounds of the beautiful surroundings. One particular highlight of this bike tour is Lake Chala – a stunningly beautiful, clear blue diamond among the dusty, brown savanna. The route leading to the lake weaves through farms on uneven tracks and is largely downhill. Having rested and camped in large 2-man tents, the journey then becomes even more spectacular. Cycling Kilimanjaro is full of surprises, and as the route leads along a steep, climbing mountain ridge towards the north, parallel to the Kenyan border the dusty tracks are replaced by increasingly green landscapes. A refreshing and beautiful view.
Kilimanjaro is ever-present as the tour reaches its highest point of 6300 feet – crossing the northern ridge of the mountain the journey weaves its way through Maasai country before reaching the Maasai village of Olpopongi. Traditional mud huts provide the accommodation here, adding a real authenticity to the journey. Moving on from the Olpopongi village the cycling Kilimanjaro tour now continues through barren savannah with the snow-capped peak of Kilimanjaro looms overhead. This bike tour is truly something special and allows the cyclists you experience one of the most stunning parts of the world from a unique perspective.
