President Barroso's recent phone calls with President Poroshenko: security situation in Ukraine and Minsk meeting

President Barroso expressed his concern with the security situation and condemned the shelling of a convoy of internally displaced people.

The President of the European Commission urged an enquiry on this incident and recalled the need to protect civilian lives. He underlined the need to stop border hostilities and the flow of arms and personnel from Russia into Ukraine.

President Barroso also informed President Poroshenko that, following the invitation he received from both President Putin and President Poroshenko to attend the Customs Union - Ukraine Summit meeting in Minsk on 26th August, he has decided to ask High Representative/Vice-President Catherine Ashton, Vice-President Günther Oettinger, responsible for energy, and Commissioner for Trade Karel de Gucht, to represent the European Union at this event.

President Barroso, on his behalf and that of the President of the European Council, also invited President Poroshenko to visit Brussels in the near future.

European satellite navigation: Galileo launches two more satellites

Tomorrow Galileo, the EU's satellite navigation programme, will send two more satellites into space, reaching a total number of 6 satellites in orbit. The lift-off will take place at the European spaceport near Kourou in French Guiana, at 14.31 CET and can be viewed via live streaming here . The launch marks another milestone for Galileo as a step towards a fully-fledged European-owned satellite navigation system. These two satellites are the first of a new series which is fully owned by the EU. With the forthcoming addition of a new wave of such satellites to the existing array, the availability and coverage of the Galileo signal will gradually improve and bring us a step closer to the fully operational phase of the programme. The satellites to be launched tomorrow, Doresa and Milena, were named by the two schoolchildren who won an EU wide drawing competition to name them. See MEMO/14/509 .

Robots lending a helping hand to build Airbus planes

Trying to squeeze into tight spaces, carrying out highly repetitive tasks and living with back injuries: these everyday realities of working in aviation construction will soon be over. By bringing robots onto the factory floor to carry out the uncomfortable and tedious tasks, the EU-funded project VALERI hopes to place a higher value on human know-how. Seven partners , including Airbus, from Spain, Germany and Austria are building a working laboratory prototype and will test it in a factory setting by 2015.
