Dark Horse Books and Vanguard Publishing Reach Agreement Regarding Classic Work of Fantasy Art Icon, Frank Frazetta

On March, 8, 2010, Frazetta Management and Vanguard announced that Frank Frazetta, and the family company, Frazetta Properties LLC had entered a new publishing relationship with Vanguard.

New York, NY, September 13, 2010 (PressReleasePoint) -- On March, 8, 2010, Frazetta Management and Vanguard announced that Frank Frazetta, and the family company, Frazetta Properties LLC had entered a new publishing relationship with Vanguard. The agreement includes various exclusive rights involving the Frazetta brand and trademark. At the time of announcement, the legendary artist said, “We’ve known Vanguard publisher J. David Spurlock for many years. It’s a natural that we should work together. I’m looking forward to seeing the quality job they do on the new Frazetta books.” Vanguard publisher J. David Spurlock said, “We are very excited about launching a line of Frazetta books under the new Vanguard Frazetta Classics brand. The line will include a series of volumes collecting Frazetta’s comics work in top quality book format. Other Vanguard Frazetta Classics will include a new edition of the 2008 hit, Frazetta - The Definitive Reference, a Frank Frazetta Sketchbook; and more—all in library-quality collections fully authorized by Frank Frazetta.”

Based on discussions with Ellie Frazetta in 2008, Dark Horse recently advertised The Classic Comics Archives Vol 1: White Indian, a 200 page 7”x 10” HC by Frank Frazetta for release in Dec. 2010 for $49.99. Dark Horse founder Mike Richardson has taken the book off his schedule, saying, “I’ve done business with Frank and Ellie Frazetta since the early eighties. This project was a result of my discussions with Ellie and her desire to see us bring more of Frank’s work into the marketplace. Sadly, things have changed with their passing and in order to avoid confusion and duplication we are canceling our own volume of his work. Dark Horse and Vanguard both have been dedicated to promoting the rich heritage that, comics and their creators, have contributed to our culture. We are pleased to work this situation out with Vanguard and respect the wishes and agreements of the estate’s representative, Frazetta LLC.”

The companies have decided that Vanguard will release the Complete Frazetta White Indian and that Dark Horse will release a second volume collecting all of the post-Frazetta material featuring Dan Brand/White Indian. Vanguard publisher J. David Spurlock said, “To have both the Vanguard and Dark Horse volumes will complete all Dan Brand/White Indian material and will serve as strong additions to any library of classic comics.” Spurlock continued by saying, “We would like to thank our friends at Dark Horse for their creativity and dedication.”

Initial direct-market orders on the previously announced Dark Horse Frazetta collection will be filled with the top-quality Vanguard collection following notices to retailers from Diamond Comics Distributors.
