Water safety is everyone’s responsibility, and May is National Water Safety Month. DCS Pool Barriers is signing on in order to help educate and make this summer a safer season.
Phoenix, Arizona, United States., April 20, 2014 - (PressReleasePoint) -
With the spring season finally making an appearance, it is once again that time when pool owners, resort facility staff, waterpark managers, and municipal workers begin making their to-do lists in preparation for opening day. All too often though, the emphasis for pool opening prep is put on tasks like cleaning and water conditioning without enough attention paid to safety. While sparkling blue water without a floating leaf in sight are definitely important goals, they do little to guarantee the health and well-being of swimmers. In this country roughly ten people die every day from unintentional drowning, a tragic statistical reality that is absolutely preventable. For that reason, as well as to promote general safe and fun aquatic activity across the entire pool and water recreation industries, the month of May has now been designated as the National Water Safety Month for the public and all pool professionals.
National Water Safety Month is the product of a partnership between the Association of Pool and Spa Professionals (APSP), the American Red Cross, the National Recreation and Park Association (NRPA), and the World Waterpark Association (WWA). It is meant to bring awareness to safety in all aquatic activities at home pools, resorts, waterparks, and public facilities. Even more specifically, it is meant to create a culture of vigilance and responsibility when it comes to adults’ roles in maintaining safe spaces for children to swim.
In order to keep family and guests safely enjoying the water this summer, it is important to follow some of the National Water Safety Month’s key guidelines before declaring the pool season officially open:
1. Be sure that all children being allowed in the pool have received adequate instruction in swimming and general pool safety.
2. Always designate an adult as the official pool supervisor especially when children are in or near the water.
3. As a pool owner, be sure to learn CPR and keep detailed instructions posted in the event that other less experienced adults are present instead.
4. Install proper pool fences or barriers, and pool gates with alarms to ensure that children are not able to gain access to a pool without the knowledge of an adult.
Swimming pools are wonderful communal spaces that bring neighbors, family, and friends together all summer to get some relief from the heat and enjoy each other’s company. For that reason, it is important that water safety is treated as a communal responsibility by recognizing National Water Safety Month this May. Consider attending or even holding a water safety event to get more ideas as to how a swimming pool can be made into a safe and enjoyable space.
