ALL dental practices must be re-registered with the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) by 5th February 2018 to be in compliance with changes to legislation relating to radiation protection, including a new HSE notification process.

This year the Ionising Radiation Regulations 2017 (IRR17) replace IRR99, and the Ionising Radiation (Medical Exposure) Regulations 2018 (IRMER18) replace IRMER 2000 and its later amendments. The new regulations reflect the EU Basic Safety Standards Directive 2013.

IRR17 took effect on 1 January 2018 in England, Scotland and Wales and requires dental practices – including those already working with ionising radiation who have previously notified the HSE – to re-register using a new online portal with £25 fee.

Registration involves answering a series of questions to identify the level of risk associated with your use of ionising radiation (dental X-ray equipment is classified as medium risk) and to ensure all legal requirements have been addressed, i.e. radiation risk assessment and appointment of an RPA (radiation protection adviser).
