TOKYO (April 5) -- Comics are being used increasingly to get messages across visually, even those aimed at the business world, as shown in the April 5 episode of Deconstructing Comics Podcast.

The episode features an interview with Doug Jackson, a Tokyo-based business consultant who was involved in adapting Patrick Lencioni's "The Five Dysfunctions of a Team" into a "manga version." The comic was drawn by Kensuke Okabayashi, author of "Manga for Dummies." Jackson states in the interview that the publisher, Wiley & Sons, initiated the project because, like many publishers today, they "are trying new things because the old things aren't working quite as well as they used to."

Jackson discusses in the interview, with host Tim Young, the challenges he faced in adapting Lencioni's "business fable" into a comics script, and the potential for using sequential art as a teaching tool -- a potential long exploited in places like Japan, but relatively untapped in the English-speaking world.

The episode also includes a talk with Grant Brownrigg of Grantland.net. Brownrigg sells usage rights to his business-themed comic strips and one-panel cartoons through the site, for use in everything from newsletters to presentations.
