Digital Library Consulting releases Veridian 3.0, the third major release of the innovative digital library software used to host collections of digitized historic newspapers. The new release incorporates several social web features, and enables libraries to crowdsource OCR text correction.

Hamilton, New Zealand, 21 June 2011 - Digital Library Consulting, a software and technology company that provides solutions to building and displaying online digital libraries, today released the latest version of its digital library software, Veridian. Veridian is used by libraries, archives, cultural societies, and other organizations to present large, metadata-rich digital collections on the Internet. The latest release, version 3.0, advances Veridian’s innovative approach to “hands-off” digital libraries by introducing several new features and functions to meet the changing demands of the social web.

Amongst the new features, Veridian now has a user-management system, which allows libraries to leverage their user communities to improve poor OCR text with a User Text Correction add-on module. D.L. Consulting also made improvements to the user interface, and improvements to its already impressive scalability and speed.

Stefan Boddie, CEO at Digital Library Consulting comments, "We feel it's no longer good enough to simply display digital collections nicely online. Users of these digital collections want more - they want to be able to contribute and add value. And owners of the digital collections want to encourage user communities to form around their collections. So we believe the ability for users to contribute by correcting OCR errors using Veridian 3.0 is a key addition to the software. We're very excited to see how this new feature is used and what effect it has on some of our customer's existing digital library projects."

First offered in 2009, Veridian has been chosen to display large-scale digitized newspaper collections by national, local, and academic institutions throughout the world.
