Despite numerous challenges, the Defense Logistics Agency was still able to raise a significant amount towards its 2013 Combined Federal Campaign goal, the agency’s CFC vice chair said at a recognition ceremony for employees, team captains and key workers in the national capital area March 12 at the McNamara Headquarters Complex.
“This year came with many challenges, government shutdowns, furloughs, but the DLA CFC core team, the team captains and key workers took on the challenge and they rallied together to raise awareness of the needs of over 4,400 different charities,” Kathy Cutler, DLA chief information officer, said. “We raised over $365,000, which was 86 percent of our goal, which was certainly a great mark in this environment. And overall the agency received the Merit award for all of its efforts. So it was a great job by all. Because of all the hard work and dedication, you, everybody in this audience, made it possible. … And in spite of all the challenges that we faced, many in the audience actually made 100 percent of their goal related to CFC.”
Although the agency was shy of its goal of $425,000, that doesn’t mean the agency’s campaign wasn’t a success, DLA Vice Director Ted Case said.
“This was a hard year,” he said. “But we really had an amazing teamwork approach to this and a lot of camaraderie. And I can’t tell you another year when we had so much fun. … Through it all, the message was always clear: take some time to take care of others. And that was a very, very important message we put out. So everyone will be better off. Every penny and every dollar counted toward meeting our goal to help those in need. It doesn’t really matter that we didn’t make the goal; in spirit we made the goal.”
Although they tell a part of the story, the CFC campaign is about more than just the numbers, said guest speaker Anthony DeCristofaro, assistant director of the DoD Voluntary Campaign Management Office, who likened the agency’s CFC efforts to a salt shaker.
“When it rained this year, it poured,” he said. “It poured your generosity, and you poured your heart and soul into this campaign and your time. What the CFC allowed you to do was become a salt shaker in the community. It allowed you to add some spice to the lives of people who turned to some of the more than 4,000 charities for help and hope every year. So I’m here today to say: Don’t lose your saltiness because the CFC campaign is coming to a close, because without your gifts, thousands of charities might have to close their doors or cut back their services. So, every gift, every volunteer hour, is going to go a long way to preserving and extending life for those who really need help. Your engagement in this is what I’m here to say thank you for. … So for me, I want to say, ‘Thank you,’ and, ‘Pass the salt.’”
During the ceremony, eight activities were recognized for reaching the 100 Percent Goal Award. They are: DLA Human Resources; DLA Logistics Operations; DLA Strategic Plans and Policy; DLA Acquisition; DLA Joint Reserve Force; DLA Installation Support; DLA Distribution’s facility in Indian Head, Md.; and Naval Supply Systems Command Energy.
Two activities, DLA Strategic Plans and Policy and DLA Joint Reserve Force, received the President’s Award for achieving at least $275 per capita in contributions or 75 percent employee contribution.
Four activities received the Chairman’s Award for achieving at least $225 per capita in contributions, or 67 percent employee participation. They are: DLA Distribution in Indian Head, NAVSUP Energy, DLA Human Resources and DLA Acquisition.
The Honor Award, which recognizes activities with an average of $175 per capita or 60 percent employee participation, went to DLA Logistics Operations.
Four activities received the Merit Award for an average of $125 per capita or 50 percent employee participation. They are: DLA Director’s Staff, DLA Installation Support, DLA Information Operations and DLA Finance.
In addition, eight activities received the Outstanding Payroll Deduction Giving Award for achieving 75 percent or more in contributions made by payroll deduction. They are: DLA Director’s Staff, DLA Installation Support, DLA Human Resources, DLA Logistics Operations, DLA Finance, DLA Joint Reserve Force, DLA Energy, NAVSUP Energy, and DLA Distribution in Indian Head.
Previously, at the 2013 Department of Defense CFC ceremony held Jan. 30 at the Pentagon, DLA received the National Capital Region’s Merit Award for agencies achieving 50 percent employee participation or $125 per capita in contributions.
In the special award categories, DLA won second place in the 2013 CFC Communication Awards in the “Best Writing/Publication” category, and Bernadine Bowyer, DLA CFC campaign manager in DLA Information Operations, was recognized with the McCarter and Richardson Award for Outstanding Campaign Manager in a Medium Agency.
With a longer than normal campaign due to the government shutdown, Bowyer and her eight CFC team members worked continuously to promote a number of high-profile fundraisers, including chili cook-offs, a classic car show and a Mardi-Gras themed festival.
“We wanted to make sure everyone had the opportunity to give,” she said. “We had a lot of fundraising events, so by supporting our events, you’re giving. And our team came up with so many innovative and interactive ways to have fun, so I think that made the difference in this campaign. We made giving fun because it shouldn’t be burdensome. We all rolled up our sleeves and got to work. We did a lot, and we did a darn good job. This was just a rough year. But we had fun and we made a difference for people in need.”
