*DOCTORS ASK THE SIKH COMMUNITY TO PLEDGE FOR A HEALTHY HEART*

Local cardiologist  and dietitian will be encouraging the Sikh Community to pledge for a healthy heart, as well adhere to principles of heart healthy eating for the lunch being served.

Sunday, February 24, 2013

Sikh Society Calgary, 719 81st SW

9:30 am - 12:30 pm

The South Asian (people from India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, and Nepal) community is the fastest growing community in Canada. Despite improvements in cardiovascular outcomes, heart disease continues to be a major cause of death worldwide. South-Asians have an 3-5 times increased risk for developing blockages in their arteries leading to heart attacks and strokes, and have the highest death rates from heart disease than any other ethnic group.

On Sunday, February 24, 2013 local cardiologist, Dr. Anmol Kapoor and Registered Dietitian, Raman Kapoor, will be encouraging members of the Sikh Community to sign a pledge for a healthy heart. With this pledge individuals are committing to focus on their heart health. The signing will be taking place between 9:30 am at 12:30 pm.

Every Sunday, the Sikh Temple provides lunch for all participants. In addition to the pledge, the Langar (lunch) being served will adhere to heart healthy guidelines focusing on lower fat, lower salt and lower sugar choices. Dietitians, doctors and other health professionals will be available to answer any questions. This event is open to the public and free of charge.

Dr A. Kapoor explains, “South Asians are prone to developing CHD at a younger age, often before the age of 40 years in men. It is therefore very important to increase the awareness of heart disease in this population, and we need to target them while they are young.”

DIL Walk is first of its kind Non for Profit initiative, in Canada, which is funded and supported by the local medical community at large (including specialists, family physicians, dentists and health professionals). It’s goal is to help raise awareness and help reduce heart attack rates in South Asians. The 3rd Annual DIL Walk is scheduled on Saturday, June 1 at Lester B. Pearson High School in Calgary and Saturday, June 15 at J. Percy Page School in Edmonton.
