Recent interview with James Smith reveals importance of dryer vent cleaning and appliance maintenance which is often overlooked by homeowners
Dryer vent cleaning should be added to homeowners’ appliance maintenance routine; however, this is the one area that is often overlooked. “Lint accumulation in dryer ducts is a known cause of dryers running inefficiently,” says James Smith, Dryer Vent Wizard, (DVW), Dry Clothes, Safe Homes, California, the largest chain of dryer vent specialists in the U.S.
During a recent interview James Smith, dryer exhaust specialist, explained how 40 percent of lint from drying laundry escapes the lint screen and ends up trapped around the dryer drum, the motor and the dryer ducts. “Failure to maintain the dryer duct system causes the dryer to overwork and use more energy,” says Smith. “Dryer lint build-up causes wear and tear on the dryer motor as the system overheats and becomes a serious fire hazard.”
When asked what homeowners can do to prevent problems, James explained, “Too many people are still using flexible foil, plastic or vinyl material for their dryer duct. Though this was acceptable in the past, it has been discovered to cause problems. Technicians who work for Dryer Vent Wizard only install dryer ducts made of rigid or semi-rigid metal which reduces lint build-up. Longer dryer ducts with bends and turns can cause moisture to condense, causing lint to be trapped and allowing it to build up and reduce airflow, causing the dryer to overwork and cost more to operate.”
In addition, James spoke about leaks in a dryer exhaust system allowing increased humidity in homes and allowing mold and mildew growth to emit mold spores into homes. “Homeowners with gas dryers also risk venting problems resulting in carbon monoxide poisoning,” said James. “Annual dryer vent cleaning is recommended to keep clothes dryers running efficiently and safely.”
James N. Smith is franchise owner/operator of Dryer Vent Wizard (DVW), Dry Clothes, Safe Homes, a home service franchise based in Modesto, California.
