[19 August 2014] The East team of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) defeated the West squad in the first all-star basketball game in the 90-year history of the league, held recently at San Juan Arena.

The East team of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) defeated the West squad in the first all-star basketball game in the 90-year history of the league, held recently at San Juan Arena.

Scoring 104-97, top players from San Beda College, University of Perpetual Help, Arellano University, Jose Rizal University, and San Sebastian College beat the West team composed of cagers from College of St. Benilde, Emilio Aguinaldo College, Colegio de San Juan de Letran, Lyceum of the Philippines University, and Mapua Institute of Technology.

Proceeds of the game, sponsored by wireless services leader Smart Communications, Inc. (Smart), will go to the Hospicio de San Jose, NCAA athletes participating in international competitions, and the NCAA personnel assistance fund.

At the same event, San Beda’s Arnaud Noah won the slam dunk competition, while Benilde’s Travis Johnson won the 3-point shootout.

Smart is also a staunch backer of the national basketball team, Gilas Pilipinas, and supports athletic activities organized by third parties in line with its goal of promoting sports development in the country.
