ESCANABA, Mich.--Dec. 9, 2013--The Plum Creek Foundation recently awarded a $1,750 grant to the Eastern Upper Peninsula College Access Network to help fund the EUP CAN DO IT initiative, which encourages area residents and youth to pursue post-secondary education.

According to Holly Rohrer, project coordinator, only 25 percent of the Eastern Upper Peninsula population has obtained an associate’s degree or higher, significantly lower than the national average of 38 percent. EUP CAN DO IT works to increase the number of students that pursue post-secondary education by hosting a variety of events each year.

“Not only do we encourage individuals to achieve a higher education, but we ensure that they have the information and resources needed to get there,” said Rohrer. “Thanks to the help of the Plum Creek Foundation, we can continue to host events that help area residents pursue a college degree.”

This year’s events include “Decision Day,” where graduating seniors will announce their post-graduation plans at an all-school assembly and “College Campus Tour,” which will take 50 students to visit three community college campuses. The program also helps with FAFSA assistance, ACT college readiness courses and MCAP educational development plans. Since the initiative began in July 2012, the area has seen a 2.35 percent increase in FASFA applications. EUP CAN DO IT is working to increase the area’s associate degree rate to 50 percent by 2025.

The mission of EUP CAN DO IT is to provide resources for residents of all ages and their families to discover, enroll and succeed in educational opportunities beyond 12th grade. Programs and projects are offered to area students that help promote higher education experience for all. For more information, visit www.micollegeaccess.org/directory.
