February 6, 2012 - (PressReleasePoint) -Engineering polymers are going green. More and more research and development is being done into bio fuels or bio polymers. Countries around the world are trying to reduce their dependence on fossil fuels. For these countries it means that for instance when they have a production facility which produces glass reinforced plastic, the input materials need to be imported.

It is often also a safety issue when their military force is depending heavily on foreign fuels. Bio fuels may be the key in the effort to reduce the dependence on fossil fuels. This effort will also contribute to cutting down the emission of greenhouse gasses.

Ethanol  remains the bio fuel most regularly used at the moment. For instance all gasoline which is purchased at gasoline stations in the United States contains ten percent ethanol. Most ethanol is being abstracted from corn and sugarcane. The latest research suggests to make bio fuels from seaweed. Seaweed are so called macro algae which do not require land, fresh water or fertilizers. Now engineers have produced a genetic engineered microbe which is capable of producing ethanol from seaweed.
