Nearly 43,000 lost power during Monday night’s storms
JACKSON, Miss. –Mississippi was a hotbed of tornadic activity yesterday, with numerous tornado warnings throughout the state. Customer outages peaked at 42,937 at approximately 7:30 p.m. Monday night. Crews have been working diligently since to restore power. Shortly before noon on Tuesday, about 9,600 customers remained without power.
The majority of the remaining outages are in hard-hit Rankin County. Significant numbers of outages are also in Warren and Hinds Counties.
"We're currently assessing and repairing damage," said Robbin Jeter, vice president of customer service. "We called in extra help on Sunday for this and have called in more. Contract scouts arrived this morning, and we're moving crews from north and south Mississippi into the affected areas. We've also requested another 350 linemen and 125 vegetation workers who should be here soon."
The National Weather Service stated that more severe storms, with large hail, high winds, heavy rain and tornadoes, could develop today in central Mississippi between 1 p.m. and 7 p.m. These are expected to cause additional power outages.
