Enterprising CAVC Hair & Beauty students jet off to New York after winning UK-wide competition

19 June 2014

A team of five entrepreneurial trainee beauticians from Cardiff and Vale College are on their way to New York this week, after winning a UK-wide enterprise competition.

The Chameleon Nails team beat off competition from 19 colleges from across the UK to win the prestigious Market Maker trophy with their bespoke nail varnish matching service. As part of their prize they will jet off to the Big Apple to hone their business skills and demonstrate their product at the City University of New York.

The students were presented with their trophy by Institute of Directors Wales Regional Director Robert Lloyd Griffiths, OBE. The final of the Market Maker competition was held in the IoD’s London headquarters.

“I am delighted to be here with the winners of this prestigious competition,” Mr Lloyd Griffiths said. “It is obvious that the talent and expertise of these students has shown through and it underpins the outstanding work that Cardiff and Vale College is doing in developing the entrepreneurs and business people of the future. Young entrepreneurs such as these are the lifeblood of our economy.”

The Chameleon Nails team - comprising Emma Nicolaou from Barry, Heidi Morgan from Llantwit Major, and Sophie Andrews, Chantelle Djaiz and Hollie Stark who are all from Cardiff – had to market their nail varnish matching service in a virtual trading environment. The judges were impressed by their confidence, preparation, sales figures, research and brand marketing potential.

During their US visit they will present their business model at the City University of New York, where the virtual stock market software was created, and they will learn about 3D and printing and also take part in a Business Boot Camp. The five students took part in the Market Maker competition as part of the enterprise module of their Welsh Baccalaureate.

CAVC took part in Market Maker through its position as the only Welsh college in the Gazelle Group of entrepreneurial colleges. The Gazelle Colleges Group aims to transform FE by developing new learning models focused on providing students with commercial, entrepreneurial learning opportunities. The colleges sit at the heart of their local entrepreneurial ecosystems, breaking down the barriers between business and education by developing innovative partnerships with local employers and community stakeholders, to equip students with the skills, capabilities and confidence to make or take a job.

For the handover of the trophy, the students were joined by Director of Curriculum Anne Parkin, Head of Hair, Beauty and Complementary Therapies Ceri Evans, their tutor Cat Hillier, Principal & Chief Executive Mike James, Deputy Principal Kay Martin, Head of Entrepreneurship, Employability and Enrichment Tania Davies and Chair of Governors Geraint Evans.
