Universal Music Group
America! America!

As the New Year begins, Decca is releasing a three-CD anthology dedicated to American music, which was selected as the theme for the Folles Journées de Nantes festival held on the weekend of February 1-2. For much of the world, American music is synonymous with jazz, but this collection reminds us that the US has many other genres to offer: military marches, hymns, spirituals, musical comedies, light music, concertos, operas and contemporary music. The first CD features the melodic genius of Gershwin, while the second one continues with those whom he inspired: Bernstein, of course, as well as trailblazer Charles Ives and the major contemporary movements as exemplified by Adams and Cage. The third returns to lighter fare, ranging from Copeland’s Rodeo to Grofé’s Grand Canyon Suite and, as a grand finale, the irresistible overture from Bernstein’s Candide.
