County Clare, 14th December 2007 - Minister of State and Clare T.D., Mr. Tony Killeen has welcomed the announcement by the Department of Agriculture and Food that two animal welfare and care bodies in County Clare have received funding.

"I am delighted that Clare Animal Welfare and Clare SPCA have been allocated EUR15,000 and EUR 10,000 respectively. These largely voluntary organisations do excellent work throughout the county in delivering animal care and welfare services", stated the Minister.

Minister Killeen paid tribute to those involved in both organisations and to the efforts and sacrifices made by them in circumstances that are often difficult.

"I am well aware of the increasing demands on their services and I hope that the funding that is being provided will help in sustaining their efforts through the coming year", he said.

The Minister commented, "I accept that this funding does not cover the full costs to these bodies of meeting all the demands made on them. They will continue to need the support of the general public to maintain their operations at effective levels. I would appeal to people to continue to give that support in any way they can", added the Minister.

Meanwhile, Minister Killeen appealed to members of the public people to act responsibly and with foresight in relation to giving pets as Christmas presents.

"Every year in Clare, we sadly witness large numbers of animals being abandoned. I would ask parents in particular to heed the good advice given by animal welfare organisations in relation to giving animals as presents to children", he concluded.
