Attorney Evan Guthrie of the Evan Guthrie Law Firm in Charleston, South Carolina spoke about estate planning and probate to senior citizens at Grand Oaks residences in Charleston, SC on Tuesday September 17, 2013. The event was sponsored by the South Carolina Aging In Place Coalition Speaker’s Bureau as an educational outreach event to alert seniors of information and resources to help them successfully age in place. There were several speakers that spoke on the core tenants of SC Aging In Place including Healthy Living, Livable Residences, Financial and Legal, Supportive Relationships, and Transportation.
Attorney Evan Guthrie spoke during the Financial and Legal section and in particular how to best remain in their chosen home or residence through legal information and strategy. Mr. Guthrie went into the need to do estate planning focused on the time that one was still alive through incapacity planning and advance directives and healthcare planning. Attorney Guthrie went into what would happen if one became incapacitated without proper advanced planning and the possibility that it could interrupt with one’s ability to remain at home and the time and expense of going through the probate court with a conservator and guardian. Mr. Guthrie talked about how a durable power of attorney could prevent the need for living probate and make the choice of who would manage one’s affairs if they were no longer able to. Attorney Guthrie also went into the different types of advanced directives and healthcare planning and what a healthcare power of attorney and a living will do to help prevent difficulty down the line.
Mr. Guthrie enjoyed his visit to Grand Oaks and the chance to be able to speak to some of their residents and let them know about all of the different resources provided by the South Carolina Aging In Place Coalition. Attorney Guthrie was happy to talk about the importance of estate planning to those that can help spread the word among their peers and help prevent difficulty that can arise without a proper plan in place. Mr. Guthrie looks forward to being able to speak to many others at Aging in Place events in the future.
