Public speaking expert Seymour Segnit today released the second of his free online speaking lessons at ConfidentlySpeaking.com. Titled "Perfectionism Is Stupid", the new lesson advises viewers to forgive themselves when they make small speaking mistakes.
Cornwall-on-Hudson, NY, May 08, 2009 (PressReleasePoint) -- Public speaking expert Seymour Segnit today released the second of his free online speaking lessons. Titled "Perfectionism is Stupid", the new video advises viewers to forgive themselves when they make mistakes while giving a speech.
The lesson can be viewed online at http://bit.ly/fear-of-public-speaking-perfection .
"I'm not saying your shouldn't try to be your best when giving a talk," Segnit says, "but the emotional energy that sometimes goes into trying to make something absolutely perfect is counterproductive."
Segnit advises people with a fear of public speaking not get hung up on small flaws and speaking gaffes. He says the great public speakers simply move on, or else brush off a particularly bad mistake with humor.
"If you look at the greatest speakers out there," Segnit says, "the ones with the greatest stage presence – say Barack Obama or Tony Robbins – they make mistakes, and they make them all the time."
"Just be as good as you can and enjoy the ride," he says.
Segnit, whose company CTRN: Change That's Right Now coaches people to help them overcome the fear of public speaking, launched his new series of video lessons to help people deal with the stress of speaking in front of a crowd.
"There are lots of great resources out there about public speaking," he says. "But very few of them deal with the psychological aspects of giving a speech, and that's what most people are really struggling with."
Segnit's video lessons run from two to five minutes and are available through his "Confidently Speaking" video blog at http://ConfidentlySpeaking.com . This lesson can also be seen on YouTube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DSgf7Mnq_g8
