FedEx Roissy CDG Hub Becomes Home to Europe’s First Forward Response Centre
FedEx Express has Transported Almost 4 Tonnes of Medical Aid to Kobe Refugee Camp in Southeast Ethiopia in Collaboration with Heart to Heart International and International Medical Corps
PARIS, October. 27, 2011—FedEx Express, the world’s largest express transportation company and a subsidiary ofFedEx Corp.(NYSE: FDX), just delivered approximately 8800 lbs (4 tonnes) worth of hygienic aid to Kobe refugee camp in southeast Ethiopia. The charitable initiative was organized in collaboration with Heart to Heart International and International Medical Corps with the aim of providing medical assistance to refugee families located in crowded displacement camps in the region.
FedEx delivery of medical supplies to Ethiopia coincides with company’s announcement to open Europe’s first humanitarian ‘Forward Response Center’ at the FedEx Roissy-Charles De Gaulle hub. The centre will facilitate the work of Heart to Heart International, a not-for-profit organization that specializes in volunteer action and worldwide humanitarian assistance, by serving as a secure warehouse where medical and other emergency supplies can be safely stocked and quickly transported by FedEx when disaster strikes.
The relief aid consists of 3,960 individual medical kits which serve to reduce susceptibility to hygiene-related diseases and mortality amongst malnourished children and pregnant and lactating women with no access to safe drinking water and sanitation facilities. The in-kind transportation of medical supplies provides timely relief to the vulnerable refugee children and adults. More than 13.3 million people are currently in need of urgent humanitarian assistance throughout Kenya, Ethiopia and Somalia where the drought and famine emergency continues to intensify. The kits were generously donated by Heart to Heart International, transported by FedEx and will be distributed at refugee camps in Ethiopia by International Medical Corps.
“We are tremendously grateful to Heart to Heart International and FedEx for providing these critical relief supplies to help us respond to the famine and drought-affected communities in East Africa,”says Nancy Aossey, President & CEO of International Medical Corps.“This vital donation of medicines, supplies and hygiene kits will enable us to reach thousands of children and families in need of immediate, lifesaving resources.”
“We work with FedEx on emergencies like this one in the Horn of Africa, because lives are on the line and our aid absolutely, positively has to be there on time,”said Andre T. Butler, Heart to Heart’s CEO.“In crises like this, we are not just sending relief aid, but delivering hope to tens of thousands of people in desperate need. And I am confident with the new Forward Response Centre at the FedEx hub in Paris, we have strengthened our capabilities to reach people in need around the world, on time.”
The new Forward Response Center will allow Heart to Heart to respond more rapidly to disasters in Europe, Middle East, Africa and Indian Subcontinent. FedEx also provides Heart to Heart priority space in its aircraft heading to the affected zones and helps with customs procedures for jurisdictions where regulations can be complex.
“We are proud of our alliance with Heart to Heart International and International Medical Corps in delivering much needed medical aid to Ethiopia.”said Gerald P. Leary, president, FedEx Express EMEA.“It is also an honor to collaborate with Heart to Heart International in pioneering Europe’s first Forward Response Centre at the CDG hub. For the past 14 years, FedEx team members in the U.S. have been working hand-in-hand with Heart to Heart by volunteering in delivery centres as well as on the front line in communities. Our collaboration is both expanding and strengthening over time; now, with the Forward Response Centre at the CDG hub, FedEx capabilities in Europe can better support Heart to Heart International’s impressive humanitarian efforts.”
Disaster relief remains a key cornerstone of FedEx responsible corporate citizenship: last year alone, the company donated 5.2 million pounds of charitable shipping globally, equivalent to 87 Boeing 757 planes of donated aid.
