Enterprise Breaches Rose to More Than 370 Per Day On Average Over the Last Quarter of 2013; Just Four Nations Accounted for Over 70 Percent of Observed Infections in 2013

Milpitas, CA - Apr 29, 2014 – FireEye, Inc. (NASDAQ: FEYE), the leader in stopping today’s advanced cyber attacks, today announced the release of its Regional Advanced Threat Report for Europe. Detailing malicious activities captured by the FireEye Security Platform throughout 2013, the report finds that more than 90 advanced persistent threat (APT) families were active across Europe, with the healthcare/pharmaceutical vertical being the most targeted.

“The European continent is quickly approaching an inflection point in its cyber security landscape that is much akin to what North America saw in 2011,” said Paul Davis, vice president, Europe at FireEye. “With advanced threat actors quickly scaling their operations against Europe’s most critical industries, we now have to turn our attention away from traditional defenses that cannot cope with these new and quickly growing challenges.”

Drawing on worldwide data gathered from nearly 40,000 unique cyber attacks (more than 100 per day) and over 22 million malware command and control (CnC) communications, the Advanced Threat Report provides a look into cyber attacks that routinely bypass traditional defenses such as firewalls, next-generation firewalls, IPS, anti-virus, and security gateways.

Some of the key findings from the Regional Advanced Threat Report for Europe based on the data gathered by FireEye include:

  • Great Britain, Switzerland, Germany, and France are the top four most attacked countries in Europe and accounted for 71 percent of all infections observed across the continent.
  • The top four countries that were most targeted by APT attacks in 2013 were:
  1. Germany
  2. United Kingdom
  3. Switzerland
  4. Luxembourg
  • The following verticals were the top five most targeted in Europe by APT attacks in 2013:
  1. Federal Government
  2. Financial Services
  3. Healthcare/Pharmaceuticals
  4. Telecommunications
  5. High-Tech
  • Based on the 20 distinct verticals that FireEye observed globally in 2013, no European country saw more than 60 percent of their verticals targeted in APT attacks, with the highest being France and the United Kingdom at 12 verticals each.

About FireEye, Inc.

FireEye has invented a purpose-built, virtual machine-based security platform that provides real-time threat protection to enterprises and governments worldwide against the next generation of cyber attacks. These highly sophisticated cyber attacks easily circumvent traditional signature-based defenses, such as next-generation firewalls, IPS, anti-virus, and gateways. The FireEye Threat Prevention Platform provides real-time, dynamic threat protection without the use of signatures to protect an organization across the primary threat vectors and across the different stages of an attack life cycle. The core of the FireEye platform is a virtual execution engine, complemented by dynamic threat intelligence, to identify and block cyber attacks in real time. FireEye has over 1,900 customers across more than 60 countries, including over 130 of the Fortune 500.
