Encouraging Freshmen to “Play Hard, Play Green!”

(27 June 2014, press release) Each year, Hong Kong’s higher education institutions organise countless numbers of orientation camps. Piles of sponsored & promotional products, bottled water, food, disposable lunch boxes & utensils are always left behind after the event, causing wastage.

So for this year’s summer, Friends of the Earth (HK) decides to join hands with student volunteers from different colleges and universities to host the 1stGreen! O Camp Project. Orientation camps from all Hong Kong institutions are invited to pledge to undertake at least 3 green actions – minimising waste, cherishing food, saving water and reducing carbon emission. Orientation camp organisers can also get creative by adding green elements to their camps and win the Green! O Camp Championship. The 5 most outstanding teams will be granted HK$3,000 subsidies to support their future green activities.

The project has already received the support of 9 institutions and a number of green student organisations. The Green! O Camp working committee, comprised of students from various higher education institutions, will promote the green culture to freshmen through orientation camps, enhancing environmental awareness and reducing waste within the campus.

Green! O Camp is now open for registration. All orientation camp organising committees from colleges and universities are invited to participate and advertise the green culture to their freshmen. Reduce waste and improve environmental awareness in the campus! Project details can be found in the website: http://www.foe.org.hk/GOC
