The National Park Service is preparing a foundation document to inform planning and management of Vicksburg National Military Park. The park welcomes all interested persons to participate in this effort.

A foundation document affirms a national park unit's core purpose and significance, its most important resources and values, and interpretive themes that tell the American story. This foundation document will be used to inform future management and planning decisions at Vicksburg National Military Park. It will not give specific recommendations for future conditions at the park, but will instead provide a framework for future park decisions by documenting what is most important about the park and understanding what is needed to protect and preserve those resources.

The National Park Service aims to complete a foundation document for each park unit in the system by 2016, the 100-year anniversary of the agency's creation. The Vicksburg National Military Park Foundation Document is part of this nationwide effort.
