The 2018 annual edition of the Francouvertes competition kicked off with a performance by last year’s winner, Lydia Képinski, at Montréal’s Lion d’Or on Feb. 5, 2018. The 21 contestants in this key contest have been announced and, once more, SOCAN will support the event by presenting the “J’aime mes ex” series of concerts – during which 10 Francouvertes alumni will perform as opening acts of both the first and semi-final rounds.

The organization also sponsors the Paroles & Musique Award, a $1,000 cash prize to be awarded to one of the semi-finalists for their songwriting talent.

This year’s edition will mark the debut of a new award, the OFQJ-SOCAN Award, given to the winner of the Paroles & Musique Award, that will offer them a creative residency at the Paris SOCAN House, as well as a $1,500 all-inclusive international mobility grant presented by the Office Franco-Québécois pour la Jeunesse (OFQJ). The contest winner will, of course, be invited to perform in the “J’aime mes ex” series during next year’s Francouvertes.

These prizes are part of a myriad of rewards, grants and concert opportunities, worth more $160,000, to be awarded to this year’s contestants. All told, 21 artists and bands from Québec, Ontario and Manitoba will participate in the preliminary round, over seven nights at Lion D’Or, every Monday from Feb. 19 to March 26 and, exceptionally, on Tuesday, April 3.

The lineup is:

  • Gabriel Bouchard, Raphaël Dénommé, zouz (Feb. 19);
  • Jay Scøtt X Smitty Bacalley, Of Course, LaF (Feb. 26);
  • Mathieu Bérubé, Lou-Adriane Cassidy, Valse Fréquence (March 5);
  • Laura Lefebvre, Julien Déry, Mort Rose (March 12);
  • Barrdo, Totem Tabou, CRABE (March 19);
  • Laura Babin, Billy Love Band, Anthony Roussel (March 26); and
  • Rayannah, Héliodrome, Sam Faye and D-Track (April 3).

The semi-finals will be held on March 16-18, at Lion d’Or, and the final round will be held at Club Soda on Monday, May 7, 2018.

The ten “exes” that will perform as part of the “J’aime mes ex” series are:

  • Émile Bilodeau (Feb. 19)
  • Sarahmée (Feb. 26)
  • Les Louanges (March 5)
  • Maude Audet (March 12)
  • Marie Claudel (March 19)
  • David Marin (March 26)
  • Ivy (April 3)
  • Rosie Valland (April 16)
  • Dany Placard (April 17)
  • Mon Doux Saigneur (April 18)

Once more this year, Klô Pelgag and Benoit Pinette (Tire le coyote) will be the event spokespersons, and the shows will be hosted by Isabelle Ouimet, a SOCAN member and programming co-ordinator for Coup de cœur francophone. To find out more, visit the Francouvertes website (French only).
