“The main trend I find when identifying HR problems with small businesses in particular, is that everything is built on the fly”, Steve says. “The business is built on the back of a core skill which initially allows the business to grow. However there comes a tipping point when people need to be properly managed and unfortunately, many owners and managers just don’t know what to do when that time comes”.
Research in Australia has indicated that disengaged staff leaving a job for greener pastures costs local businesses up to $100 billion a year (Mercer/Fairfax), a frightening figure when you think about much larger economies around the world. Steve says that improvement can come down to communication and engagement of staff.
“An example of something made far more complex and time consuming than it should be is Performance Management” says Steve. “Simplifying that process, looking forward and getting the employee to talk about where they are and where they want to go reduces meeting time and improves engagement” says Steve.
