Southeast Missouri State University’s Department of Music will present Offenbach’s “La Périchole” Friday, Jan. 18, at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday, Jan. 20, at 3 p.m. in the Donald C. Bedell Performance Hall at Southeast’s River Campus.

“La Périchole,” The Street Singer, is the story of two starving street musicians who become entangled with an insecure, conniving politician. The operetta is appealing to modern audiences because of its relatability and the similarities to present day political strife.

The show will be presented under the direction of Dr. Christopher Goeke, professor of music at Southeast, who has chosen to present the show with an English translation. Goeke, with the help from Dr. Tim Schmidt and Dr. Leslie Jones, both professors of music and applied voice at Southeast, have fully adapted the operetta from its 1800’s score using software specifically designed for music notation.

“La Périchole” is a fun, offbeat, and at times, touching story that combines contemporary lyrics with upbeat music to connect with the audience” said Goeke.

“It’s an eccentric story that brings together a cast of characters, including a mysterious bride, a jealous groom, scrappy barmaids, insecure politicians, an awkward wedding, and jail time,” he said.

The story may have been written nearly 200 years ago, but its premise and characters are still relatable to audiences today, Goeke said. Southeast’s production is also updated with modern features.

“Our version also includes whining ‘Housewives of Manhattan’ and even a pop star celebrity sighting,” he said.

The result is a captivating production that will keep the audience talking long after the show is over, added Goeke.
