CHRIS Whincup and Andy Solomons shared an opening stand of 151 to put Frocester on the way to a high-scoring two-wicket home win over Thornbury in the quarter-finals of the Stuart Canvas Gloucestershire Cup.

Sri Lankan all-rounder Solomons perished for 91 off just 47 balls (12 fours, five sixes) while Whincup hit 71 but it also needed a partnership of 84 for the sixth wicket between Ross Martin (60 not) and Matt Tuck (30) to help get Frocester over the line with just a ball to spare as they overhauled the visitors’ total of 306-5, Josh Riggs claiming 3-30 from seven.

Thornbury, who won the toss, earlier rallied from 61-3 as Luke Davis (113) and Danny Slade (91) put on 175 while some late hitting from Sam Summerfield (32 not) also boosted the total with the wickets shared around.

There are two further quarter-finals on Sunday with Bishopston hosting Tewkesbury and Gloucester City Winget entertaining Knowle. The final last-eight tie is on August 5 between Stroud and Cheltenham.

Bristol, meanwhile, will be bidding for a place in the last eight of the ECB’s Vitality Club T20 when they travel to Exmouth on Sunday for an area play-off.

The WEPL champions will meet Port Talbot Town, of the South Wales Premier League, with the winners then going on to face either the hosts or Penzance for a place in the national quarter-finals which take place on August 12.
