Gfiles, the on governance and bureaucracy in INDIA has honoured Dr. E Sreedharan and seven other Civil Servants who have done exemplary work in the areas of health, social upliftment of disadvantaged sections and policing. New Delhi: Gfiles, the widely read magazine on newsmagazine on governance and bureaucracy in the country, has honoured metro man Dr. E Sreedharan and seven other Civil Servants who have done exemplary work in the areas of health, social upliftment of disadvantaged sections and policing.  
Dr. Sreedharan and the other civil servants were honoured with the Gfiles governance awards by a distinguished group comprising T K A Nair, Principal Advisor to the Prime Minister of India, Shekhar Dutt, Governor of Chhattisgarh, Panakaj Pachauri Communications Advisor to the Prime Minister of India   and former Cabinet Secretary Prabhat Kumar, in a glittering ceremony at India International Centre (IIC).  
Satish Kumar, Principal Advisor to Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC), received the award on behalf of an indisposed Dr Sreedharan.  The bureaucrats including Bihar Director General of Police (DGP) Bihar Abhayanand were present to receive the Excellent and Exceptional Contribution awards.
The award ceremony, second consecutive in last two years, coincided with gfiles anniversary which has completed six years in publication.  
The monthly emerged as the brain-child of Former India Today, Editor, Inderjit Badhwar, Former Political Editor, Jain TV Anil Tyagi, and well known Financial Expert Dr.G.S.Sood. The vision was to create a monthly magazine on governance and bureaucracy—the people who run the government of India.
This year’s awardees were finalised by a high-power five member jury comprising of former Cabinet Secretary Prabhat Kumar, former Chief Secretary of Haryana Vishnu Bhagwan, former Secretary power, Anil Razdan, former secretary internal security, DG CRPF and Delhi Police Commissioner M.B. Kaushal and CMD, IDBI Bank R. M. Malla.
 Dr. Sreedharan was awarded Lifetime Achievement Award for completing some of India’s largest infrastructure projects including Delhi Metro without time and cost overruns. Apart from the DMRC, Dr. Sreedharan, a civil engineer, served Indian Railways with distinction in the past. Atul N Patney, Private Secretary to Minister of   Social Welfare a 1999 Maharatra cadre officer, was given Excellent Contribution Award successfully conducting parliamentary, assembly and panchayat elections and bringing about inclusive growth in naxal-affected Gadchiroli District of Maharashtra.
Jayesh Ranjan, Vice-Chairman & Managing Director of AP Industrial Infrastructure Corporation Ltd, Hyderabad , a 1992 Andhra Pradesh Cadre IAS, was also presented Excellent Contribution Award for implementing social mobilization approach with the support of World Bank to impact an all round improvement in the condition of the poorest of the poor in the state.
Ashwani Lohani,  Chief  Mechanical Engineer Northern Railway, a 1980 batch Indian Railway Service officer,  on the other hand, was honoured with the award for his outstanding contribution to Indian tourism both at national and state level.
Santha Sheela Nair, Vice-Chairman Planning Commission Tamil Nadu,  a 1973 batch IAS got the Excellent Contribution Award for introduction of compulsory rain harvesting in Chennai and other parts of Tamil Nadu.
Amarjit Singh, Additional Secretary Ministry of Human Resources, a 1982 batch IAS of  Gujarat cadre civil servant, was conferred the award for implementing safe motherhood and child survival programme through an efficient public-private partnership in the public health sector.
Bihar DGP Abhayanand a 1977 batch IPS officer of Bihar cadre, received an Exceptional Contribution Award, for policing initiatives such as speedy trial and formation of Special Auxiliary Police from among retired army officers, thereby tremendously improving law and order in the state.
J S Deepak, a 1982 IAS of Uttar Pradesh Cadre, who is credited with scripting one of the most successful auctions conducted by any government across the globe, is awarded with Excellent Contribution award for e-auctioning 3G spectrum.
According to Editor gfiles Anil Tyagi, the awards are an effort to recognize work done by Indian Civil Servants for the welfare of ‘aam aadmi’ – the poorest of the poor across the country. “The present award is an attempt to recognize excellence in governance by an independent jury comprising of former bureaucrats of unmatched standing backed by the credibility and goodwill of gfiles,” Tyagi claimed.
Emphasising on the need to felicitate civil servants, Nair said, “ lack of motivation is the root cause why performance of civil servants are not up to mark recognizing merit is the only way to boost idealism and a desire to serve.” Nair was happy that   gfiles’ acknowledging the good work of the bureaucracy. Prabhat Kumar commended the effort of the gfiles in showcasing the stories of courage, compassion and innovation.
