Group Health CEO Among 100 Most Powerful People in Health Care
August 25, 2010
Group Health Cooperative President and CEO Scott Armstrong has been named one of the 100 most powerful people in health care by Modern Healthcare magazine.
President Barack Obama is No. 1 on the list, followed by Kathleen Sebelius, secretary of the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, and Sen. Max Baucus of Montana. Armstrong is No. 38 on the list.
This is the magazine's ninth annual ranking of the "100 Most Powerful People in Healthcare." The list, voted by the magazine's readers, recognizes people implementing the new health care reform law and pushing for other regulatory changes.
Armstrong and Group Health gained national attention last year as Congress decided whether to replicate our health cooperative model in other states through the health care reform bill. Although the idea did not move forward, Group Health was recognized for its work to improve and deliver quality patient care while controlling costs.
The magazine article included an interview with Armstrong.
"The question is how we implement it and make this real," Modern Healthcare quoted Armstrong as saying, adding that he was recently appointed as a commissioner to the Medicare payment Advisory Commission. "I run a company that is demonstrating how to make this possible."
Armstrong called the final health care reform bill "a great first step," by expanding access to the uninsured. "But it really is only a first step," he added. "It sets us up to get into a whole body of work on changing the care delivery system."
