March 19 (TOKYO) Handheld devices such as the Kindle, iPhone, or iPad, are increasingly becoming a platform for publishing comics. This movement is discussed in this week's episode of the Deconstructing Comics Podcast.

The episode features a talk with Dale Wilson of DWAP Productions, a small publisher in Los Angeles, which is increasingly releasing its content electronically in addition to, or instead of, traditional paper means.

One company that is facilitating the movement to iPhone-app comics is Robotcomics.net, whose Deputy Director Dave Baxter also appears in the episode. Baxter explains who the players are in this market, the process of converting a comic to a handheld app, and the challenge of keeping up with changes in technology.

"It's a really interesting development," said Tim Young, host of Deconstructing Comics. "When it's done well, an iPhone-app comic can add a whole new dimension to the reading experience. On the other hand, it can be done poorly, and detract from the experience. But it's such a new area; the techniques are sure to improve as we move forward."
