NEW YORK CITY, New York – April 23, 2009 – Healogica, Inc. (www.healogica.com) today announced the launch of the web’s most innovative and easy-to-use clinical trial website that helps connect patients with clinical research studies. Launching at the 2009 Health 2.0 / Information Therapy conference, Healogica has built a comprehensive, structured clinical trials database allowing patients to easily search and select relevant clinical trials based on their health profile. Similarly, clinical research coordinators can search, screen, and select relevant patients for their research studies through Healogica’s website. More efficient clinical trial enrollment will lead to the approval of more life-saving new drugs and devices.

Built on proprietary search and clinical algorithms, Healogica takes the guesswork out of searching for and discovering clinical trials. “The drug development process is a black box for most patients. We aim to increase awareness of and access to clinical trial information, and we want to greatly increase patient participation in clinical research studies,” said Healogica co-founders, Jean-Luc Neptune, MD MBA and Edward Shin, MD at the Health 2.0 conference, adding that “We are thrilled to give both patients and clinical researchers alike a convenient platform to efficiently connect, thereby speeding up the clinical trial recruitment process.”

Initially launching with a cancer and diabetes clinical trials database, Healogica will eventually deliver a database covering all conditions, both common and rare. Neptune noted that awareness of clinical trials is dismally low and that deploying Web 2.0 technologies will serve to dramatically increase patient awareness and participation in clinical trials. “85% of patients are unaware of clinical trials as an option, and as a result less than 5% of the eligible population is enrolled in a clinical trial at any given time. We must do better if life-saving therapies are to get to those who need them the most,” noted Shin.

Ron Conway, noted Silicon Valley investor and advisor to Healogica, said “Healogica’s technology and systems give patients a window through which they can actively participate in the research and development of new, potentially life-saving therapies.” Furthermore, in this Health 2.0 world, more and more patients are taking it upon themselves to be better informed about the clinical trials process. When asked on Twitter, why she participates in clinical trials, Heidi Floyd, a breast cancer survivor responded, “I am currently in several clinical trials. I do it because I hope that it will end breast cancer as quickly as possible.” Surveys show that 80% or more of patients who participate in a clinical trial would recommend doing so to a friend or family member.

Commenting on Healogica’s digital strategy, Matthew Zachary, a 13-year survivor of pediatric brain cancer and founder and CEO of the young adult cancer patient advocacy group, I’m Too Young For This! said, “Social media strategy has the potential to significantly reduce barriers to clinical trial access, specifically for the young adult cancer population. Healogica is clearly on to the next big thing.” In addition, Healogica will be partnering with the nation’s top medical centers, hospital systems, and clinics to drive patient enrollment in clinical trials.
