Hittite Introduces 43 Gbps Transimpedance Amplifier (TIA)
Targeting Small Form Factor XLMD2 Receivers for VSR and 40GbE-FR CFP/CFP2 Modules
Chelmsford, MA 02/12/2013 -
Hittite Microwave Corporation, the world class supplier of complete MMIC based solutions for communication & military markets has released a 43 Gbps high gain transimpedance limiting amplifier (TIA+LIA) targeting VSR type receiver applications for SONET/SDH with 2~10 km of optical reach and 40 Gb Ethernet FR applications.
The HMC6590 targets high volume lower cost receivers for next generation VSR modules and is the first commercially available 43 Gbps SiGe BiCMOS TIA which achieves comparable noise performance to more expensive InP based TIA's. The high gain, high input overload current and high bandwidth performance of the HMC6590 will improve dynamic range performance in optical sensitivity and overload, and will be ideal for all data rate applications in the 40G region.
The HMC6590 features a low input referred noise of 3.0 uA (rms) and high input overload of 4 mAp-p. With 4 kΩ of differential gain, the TIA is ideal for driving DEMUX/CDR ICs without additional limiting amplifiers. The TIA features an internal DC offset feedback loop that automatically adjusts the second stage threshold point thereby compensating for variations of average input current. The decision threshold adjustment (DCA) can be manually tuned to optimize the output crossing point, and an analog control for overload optimization is also included. The HMC6590 exhibits an optical input dynamic range between -10.5 dBm and +5 dBm while maintaining 10e-12 BER over operating supply and temperature changes when integrated with a 40G PIN photodetector. The HMC6590 includes an on-chip VCC bypass capacitor, requires only power supply decoupling capacitors as external components and requires a single 3.3V supply and typically dissipates less than 300 mW. The device is characterized for operation from -5 °C to +85 °C die backside temperature. T
he latest product in Hittite's TIA portfolio to support next generation of 43 Gbps, linear and limiting type optical receiver applications where lower cost and higher integration is critical for optical component manufacturing, the HMC6590 is offered in chip form. Samples are available from stock and can be ordered via the company's e-commerce site or via direct purchase order. Request a data sheet on-line at www.hittite.com.
