In its fourth year, the Starbucks Origin Experience program has about 760 alumni. Each partner who experiences a trip to Rwanda, Costa Rica or Sumatra has an emotional reaction, often tears, when they step foot on a coffee farm for the first time.
Starbucks is hosting hiring and career fairs for veterans and active-duty military spouses across the country, including a recent event in Tacoma, Washington with nonprofit partner Goodwill Veteran Services. Vets learned, to the surprise of some, how military skills transfer to jobs within Starbucks.
Amanda Juris, a Starbucks green coffee quality specialist, won the U.S. Cup Tasters Championship. The competition is one of the events held during the Specialty Coffee Association of America’s 2014 exposition and symposium in Seattle.
Though there are many steps in between, the personal attention paid to the first 10 feet of producing a quality cup of coffee are as hands on as the last 10 feet where beverages are made for customers in stores.
