Huge response for Quakers' Yearly Meeting Gathering

The Yearly Meeting Gathering of Quakers in Britain which takes place in Bath from 2 to 9 August this year, is oversubscribed and is "regretfully having to turn away Friends."

In a statement, the Yearly Meeting Agenda Committee said: "Sensing an increasing desire among Friends to gather to 'see one another's faces', [we] chose the University of Bath in order to be able to accommodate more Friends than previously. Even so, having filled this venue to its limit, we are oversubscribed and are regretfully having to turn away Friends. Only Friends whose bookings have already been accepted will be able to attend. This includes any Friends hoping to attend only part of the event."

Yearly Meeting clerk Chris Skidmore said: "It is heartening to have such a huge response but extremely disappointing to turn away Friends. It is our experience that Friends across Britain will be upheld and strengthened by Yearly Meeting Gathering, whether or not they can be physically present."

All Quakers can keep up with the events at YMG online at www.quaker.org.uk/ymg, by following @BritishQuakers on twitter (#ymg2014) or on Facebook.

* Quakers are known formally as the Religious Society of Friends.

* Around 23,000 people attend nearly 475 Quaker meetings in Britain. Their commitment to equality, justice, peace, simplicity and truth challenges them to seek positive social and legislative change.
