The Humble Computer: Health Killer becomes Health Healer

The humble computer is a key contributing factor to a massive portion of today’s musculoskeletal and health issues, yet, in an ironic twist, a new study has revealed that the cause may now become the cure. The HELENA study group in Europe found an increase in physical activity levels in adolescents who received tailored information and feedback via their computer regarding their physical activity levels.
“Computer and internet usage is now more prevalent than ever, so it’s time we maximized the use of this versatile and interactive facility to improve healthcare and fitness” reports Karen Finnin, Australian Musculoskeletal Physiotherapist and creator of www.physios-online.com. Karen has applauded this study for encouraging online health care to become more credible, accountable and viable.
Karen developed Physios Online, an online Physiotherapy Clinic, to enable users to obtain tailored and specific advice for injury diagnosis and management online. Over 12 years of dealing with injured individuals, Karen realized that a large proportion of patients simply needed a clear diagnosis and a step by step management plan, as opposed to repeated sessions of hands on treatment.
“Of course there will always be a need for certain individuals to visit a Physiotherapist in person, but many can be empowered to manage their own injury with accurate and tailored advice provided online”, says Karen.
Physios Online also eradicates the daunting task of wading through the overabundant supply of health information on the Internet. “Self diagnosing can be time consuming and dangerous, so I was very keen to bring safety to the world of online injury management. There are many sites that offer answers to single health related questions, but this is one of very few that perform a detailed analysis of a person’s musculoskeletal issue.”
Online Healthcare has a long way to go before it has the respect, quality and usage that it needs to physically and financially offload hospitals and clinics around the world, but with organizations such as the HELENA study group, and Physios Online on the case, the future is looking healthier.
