Gold Coast, Queensland Monday 23rd of April 2018 – The second stop of the 2018 Hydralyte Sports Pro Junior series presented by Billabong will hit the Gold Coast this weekend and play host to over 100 of Australia’s best up and coming surfers.

Competitors from around the country will be eager to boost their series rankings this weekend before the series moves south to Cronulla in August. A promising forecast shows a two metre east south-east ground swell approaching towards the end of the week, providing organisers with a range of options for location on day one of competition this Saturday the 28th.

Event 1 winner and Gold Coast local Dextar Muskens has his sights set on achieving another result this weekend to boost his 2018 Australasian Junior Qualifying Series ranking.

“It’s always good having an event at home, it would be unreal if we got to surf one of the points because that rarely happens in a competition. This is my last year doing the Pro Juniors so I’m really hoping to get through some heats and then focus on the Qualifying Series,” said Muskens.

Muskens is currently sitting in second place on the Australasian series leaderboard behind Callum Robson (Tweed Heads, NSW).

Hydralyte Sports ambassador Zahli Kelly (Clayfield, QLD) will lead the chase in the Women’s division and with a first-place finish at Event 1 at Bells and finishing runner-up at The Key Sun Zinke Sydney Pro, Kelly will be confident going into the Gold Coast stop this weekend. Closely trailing Kelly in the Australasian rankings are Alyssa Locke (Tweed Heads, NSW) and Kirra Bella Olsen (Avoca, NSW).

Surfing Queensland CEO Adam Yates is thrilled to see the Pro Junior returning to the Gold Coast again and is optimistic about the forecast.

Surfing Queensland are stoked to have another Pro Junior here on the Gold Coast. The level of talent is so high in this series each year and this event provides our local surfers with the opportunity to demonstrate their skill at home,” said Yates.

“The forecast is looking promising for the weekend, we want to be able to put the best junior surfers in the country in the best conditions so we’re looking at every option for location and have our fingers crossed.”

Proudly supported by WSL, Billabong, AirAsia and Surfing Australia, the Hydralyte Sports Surf Series presented by Billabong will provide an important event platform at a crucial point in the development of Australia’s leading junior surfers.

It represents an important link in the ‘Pathway to the Podium’ developed by Surfing Australia, with surfers now able to progress from the Weet-Bix SurfGroms program, onto the Woolworths Surfer Groms Comps, into the Hydralyte Sports Surf Series presented by Billabong, followed by the nudie Australian Boardriders Battle series.
