IDC Government Insights Announces Social Media Trends for Western European Government Sector
LONDON, February 18, 2013 - A new study from IDC Government Insights reveals that 43% of survey respondents have adopted some form of social media throughout the five largest Western European governments. The study analyzes social media adoption and investment plans in Western Europe. It summarizes the results of IDC Government Insights' annual survey of government IT and non-IT executives in France, Germany, Italy, Spain, and the U.K.
The survey also found that:
- 21% of local government and 18% of central government executives have not yet adopted but plan to adopt social media in the next 24 months.
- 74% of central government respondents are planning to adopt social media to collaborate with citizens - particularly in France, Germany, and Italy.
- Limited resources and competencies to deal with social media is a primary barrier for social media adoption, particularly among central government respondents.
"Western European government executives must empower employees to test use cases that align with key business objectives because social media has very low entry points in terms of investment and end-user skills, thus a trial-and-error process can generate better benefits," said Silvia Piai, research manager, IDC EMEA Government Insights.
The study, Western Europe Government Sector Social Media Trends, 2012-2013 (IDC Government Insights #GIPP01V, January 2013), is the fourth in a series of studies that analyzes the results of IDC Government Insights' annual survey. Other studies analyze IT security, Big Data, mobile, cloud, vertical solution investments, and enterprise solution investments.
