The Ideal Follow up to COP 17 - The 5th Annual Climate Finance and Carbon Markets Africa
"It always seems impossible until it's done," (Nelson Mandela) and as the COP 17 meeting continued over the weekend the outcome was hanging in the balance until an agreement was made at the 11th hour.
24-25 January 2012, Johannesburg, South Africa- (PressReleasePoint)
Despite initial reservations, agreements were reached at the Durban meeting which clarify the future for climate investment in Africa, but the question remains: how can the continent become a bigger recipient of climate finance under the Kyoto Protocol's second commitment period?
Climate Finance and Carbon Markets Africa provides the perfect platform for addressing this issue immediately, as stakeholders in the carbon market sector congregate and look to rework their strategy in light of these outcomes.
Positioned perfectly as a follow up meeting, Climate Finance and Carbon Markets Africa 2012 will allow decisions from COP 17 to be addressed and analysed, identifying what happens for Africa now the Kyoto Protocol has been extended.
With the extension of the Kyoto Protocol reaching beyond the end of 2012, Africa will continue to leverage funding from the carbon markets as a means of stimulating projects under the Clean Development Mechanism.
The key question now is how can Africa capitalise on this, now that there is a second chance for the carbon markets- how can it be a bigger recipient of investment, what lessons can be learned from previous projects, and what needs to be changed in order to stimulate more projects.
Climate Finance and Carbon markets Africa will break down the outcomes of the Durban meeting, providing presentations on:
- South Africa's future for climate finance
- The carbon market looking to the end of 2012 and beyond
- Adaptation funding in Africa
- Emerging sectors for climate finance
