LOS ALAMITOS, Calif., 21 February 2013 - (PressReleasePoint)  – A standard on distributed interactive simulation that was sponsored by the IEEE Computer Society Standards Activities Board has been recently published.

IEEE Standard 1278.1-2012 – IEEE Standard for Distributed Interactive Simulation – Application Protocols was published on 19 December 2012 and is available at http://ieeexplore.ieee.org/servlet/opac?punumber=6387562 .

IEEE Standard 1278.1 is one of a series of Distributed Interactive Simulation (DIS) standards that are used to conduct networked simulation exercises worldwide. DIS is a multi-government and industry effort to link simulations and simulators of various types at multiple sites to create distributed simulations of highly interactive activities. The infrastructure created provides interoperability for disparate purposes, multiple technologies, products from a variety of vendors, and military platforms.

The standard defines the format and semantics of data messages, known as Protocol Data Units (PDUs) that are exchanged on a network among simulation applications and simulation management. These PDUs provide information concerning simulated entity states/interaction, warfare, logistics, simulation management, electromagnetic and acoustic emissions, radio communications, entity management, minefield, synthetic environment, simulation management with reliability, information operations, live entity information/interaction, and non-real-time protocol.

The IEEE Computer Society supports 14 standards committees. To view the full list and find out about ways to get involved, visit http://www.computer.org/standards.
