"making it an even more valuable tool for engineers, scientists and other technical professionals as they work to solve their day-to-day challenges."
IHS Inc. (NYSE: IHS), a leading global source of critical information and insight, today announced that the recently launched IHS Knowledge Collections™ of essential engineering and technical reference content now offer access to more than 100 million documents, comprising a unique collection of critical industry and discipline knowledge for engineers, scientists and other technical professionals.
The IHS Knowledge Collections help engineers make better decisions faster by providing single-point access to an extensive library of technical reference content, combined with patented question-answer search technology that allows users to quickly pinpoint the answers they need within relevant content. By empowering engineers with the knowledge they require to make better decisions faster, the IHS solution helps companies accelerate design cycles, reduce costs and lower risks.
Since launching in September 2013, the IHS Knowledge Collections have quickly grown to encompass more than 100 million documents, including standards, applied engineering reference books, manuals, dictionaries, patents and patent applications, journal articles and design principles. This rapid expansion in content means that technical professionals now have a single point of access for all the critical reference information they need to quickly solve their engineering challenges.
"This announcement brings into focus the strategy IHS has employed in its product development, placing a powerful search capability over a comprehensive database of authoritative engineering reference content and effectively bringing that into the engineering workflow," said Deni Auclair, vice president and lead analyst with Outsell, Inc., the only research and advisory firm focused exclusively on media, information and technology. "It is a model for publishers and information solutions providers looking to strengthen their position in professional workflows."
The Knowledge Collections are the most comprehensive solution that enables engineers, scientists and other technical professionals to rapidly find answers to their toughest technical problems, said Jeff Jarvis, senior director, IHS Product Design. "We continue to expand the content available in the IHS Knowledge Collections based on our customers' requirements,” he said,” making it an even more valuable tool for engineers, scientists and other technical professionals as they work to solve their day-to-day challenges."
More than 50 customers across major industry sectors have already signed up to provide their engineers with access to the IHS Knowledge Collections, and usage of the solution has tripled in just the first three months of 2014. User adoption by customers has been rapid because the solution is built as a seamless extension of the widely used IHS solutions for standards management and knowledge discovery, IHS Standards Expert® and IHS Goldfire®, respectively, which together have more than 600,000 users.
IHS also announced that it has launched IHS Knowledge Collections solutions for academic institutions and government. The academic solution is tailored to meet the requirements of faculty and students in the technical disciplines, while the government collections are targeted at engineers, scientists, researchers and others within public agencies. A solution is also available for customers that require behind-the-firewall access, called IHS Knowledge Collections for IntraSource.
Content in the Knowledge Collections includes thousands of widely used applied engineering reference works from such publishers as McGraw-Hill, Springer, John Wiley & Sons, Industrial Press, Maney and Oxford University Press, among others. Recently announced content partners for the Knowledge Collections include:
Synapse Information Resources, publisher of a chemicals database and related content;
IT Governance Publishing, the world's leading publisher of IT governance, risk and compliance content;
ASM International, which serves the materials engineering community worldwide; and,
Taylor & Francis Group's CRC Press, including a broad range of titles covering life and natural sciences and medical technology.
On May 28, 2014, at 11:00 a.m. EDT, IHS will host a 45-minute webcast introducing the IHS Knowledge Collections and providing a demo of this offering. Register today to attend this complimentary online event.
