Indian Institute of Technology Gandhinagar (IITGN) launches a 2-year Master of Arts (MA) in Society in Culture.


Ahmedabad, Gujarat, July 29, 2014 -(PressReleasePoint)- Indian Institute of Technology Gandhinagar (IITGN) launches a 2-year Master of Arts (MA) in Society in Culture.  After receiving over 400 applications from students from across the country, the programme which is the first of its kind in the country kicks off with 13 students.

Speaking at the inaugural event, Professor Tridip Suhrud, Director of Sabarmati Ashram, talked about how Mahatma Gandhi and Dr BR Ambedkar viewed equality in Indian society.  Professor Suhrud said that Ambedkar proposed a true equality in which there is an equality of humiliation, while Gandhi wanted an equality of shame.

The MA program in Society and Culture at IIT Gandhinagar provides an inter-disciplinary approach towards understanding and critically analyzing society and culture. Some of the thematic areas are Identity and Difference, Development and Exclusion, Local and Transnational Mobilities, India and its Literatures, Population and Health.

Talking about the need for such a Programme, Convener of the programme, Professor Srinivas Reddy said, “This unique, highly interdisciplinary program provides students from diverse backgrounds with several critical perspectives to explore a specific research topic of their liking. You can't find this kind of flexibility at many other institutions of higher education."

Professor Reddy said, “We envision the program to give students a critical ability to approach the world and its many challenges. Careers after the M.A. program could be related journalism, advertising/media, communications, writing, teaching, human resources, non profit (NGOs, policy think-tanks) and of course higher studies in academia.”

The MA in Society and Culture will follow a structure of four semesters and the students will require a total of 80 credits to graduate. The programme will have courses such as Archaeology of Ideas; South Asia: History, Culture & Society; Globalization and Transnationalism; Qualitative and Quantitative Research Methods; Population & Society; Music Traditions of India; History of India through Cinema; A Multilingual Nation; Mobs, Crowds and Citizens; Classical Literature in India; Philosophy of Mind; and Social Determinants of Health. Apart from the course work framework of the curriculum, all student's must complete a comprehensive master’s thesis as well.
