UCLA has maintained its position as one of the best universities on the planet, according to Shanghai Jiao Tong University’s Academic Ranking of World Universities, which was published today. The prestigious survey, which evaluates 1,000 universities, ranked UCLA 12th for the fourth consecutive year.

Among U.S. public universities, UCLA ranked second.

SJTU bases the rankings on a variety of factors, including the numbers of alumni and faculty who have won Nobel prizes and Fields Medals and quantity of research citations by faculty.

The top 11 universities were, in order, Harvard University, Stanford University, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, UC Berkeley, the University of Cambridge, Princeton University, Caltech, Columbia University, the University of Chicago, the University of Oxford and Yale University.

In addition to UCLA and UC Berkeley, four other UC campuses were among the survey’s top 50: UC San Diego (14), UC San Francisco (18), UC Santa Barbara (41) and UC Irvine (47).

UCLA also has continued to fare strongly in other prominent university rankings. UCLA is second among public universities and 23rd overall in the latest U.S. News & World Report Best Colleges; the publication also gave UCLA graduate programs strong marks in its latest graduate school rankings. UCLA was 12th in the London Times Higher Education’s 2013-14 World Reputation Rankings.
