5th May 2010: The leaked Apple iPhone 4G has exceeded consumers’ expectations, a Top10.com poll has revealed, setting the scene for the forthcoming handset to smash all existing mobile phone sales records.
Two weeks ago, the latest iPhone, tentatively tagged the ‘4G’, was leaked online after it was left in a bar by an Apple employee. Prior to the publication of its specifications a survey by Top10.com Mobile Phones found that the public were anticipating a disappointing incremental upgrade.
Of those polled, 32% said they expected the new iPhone to be ‘a mediocre update to the 3G’. 16% of participants were even less convinced of the handset’s prospects, forecasting that it would be ‘a damp squib’.
Meanwhile, 26% of the sample is anticipating a phone that is ‘good but nothing spectacular’. Worryingly, for its manufacturer just 16% said they were expecting the mobile to be ‘amazing’.
However, now that specifications of the handset are in the public domain, perceptions of the phone are much more positive. This is in part due to Apple addressing complaints with earlier editions, such as short battery life and poor camera capabilities.
In a separate survey conducted by Top10.com after the leak, consumers were asked which aspect of the phone they were most looking forward to, 15% embraced the addition of a larger battery. Meanwhile, 14% and 25% of participants respectively said they were impressed with the front facing camera and addition of flash.
Harry Jones, Director of Top 10.com, said: “There’s a huge amount of expectation among consumers about what Apple will do next with iPhone, and whether it can continue to deliver game-changing features every time it brings out a new version.
“However, the specs of the leaked iPhone appear to have far exceeded the public’s expectations, leaving Apple well placed to see off new challenges from HTC’s innovative Android phones and its traditional rivals Nokia and Sony Ericsson.”
Confusion still surrounds the timing of the launch of the new iteration of the iPhone. Industry watchers initially named June 22nd as the most likely date, but more recent speculation suggests that it could be unveiled to the world as soon as June 7th.
Top10 collated results from 213 responses to two online customer surveys hosted on the site. The tests were conducted between March 25 and May 1st.
